Fix a wet cell phone with rice

Drop your phone in the toilet? Well, millions of people do it every year, so it's only a matter of time.

Water is rumored to be the end of the road for any gadget, but if you're lucky, rice can save the day.

June 2007 saw the first cell phone water death when a Wisconsin man dove into a sewer to retrieve his dropped mobile.

The remedy for a splash landing is simple. Get the electronic disassembled and dry.

Restrain yourself. Toasters, hair dryers and (obvious to most of us) microwaves will only compromise the device.

The rice trick is excellent, non-intrusive and widely available. Switched puts together a great podcast illustrating the procedure and the science behind it.

Bad trick actually. What if you take a bath in a salt-water chlorred swimming pool with your cell phone...?? I did, and then disassembled all the parts I could in a hurry and rinsed it (the un-assebled pieces in LOTS of clean water), then I dried it or I could have used rice. The phone worked fine for another 8 months. :)
