Did you bring home the perfect puppy? Adorable, cuddly, and sweet, your dog can make a huge mess. Your puppy must be housebroken and it can't learn without your help. So learn how to help your pup learn and you will have him house trained in no time. You will need a crate that is just big enough for your dog to stand up and turn around in. You will also need a lot of patience and a positive attitude. One of the most important things is positive reinforcement. When your dog goes to the bathroom outside or in the backyard praise him. To keep your dog from making a mess on your carpets, or anywhere else in your house, keep him in the crate, but not for more than four hours at a time. When you take your dog out of the crate, either because it has been four hours or because he is crying, take him immediately outside. Here is the hardest part, self discipline. If your dog does not go to the bathroom, you must immediately return him to his crate without petting or playing with him. If your dog does go when you take him outside, congratulations you are one step closer to having a housebroken dog! You can now pet and praise your dog all you want.
