Stainless steel works good...go get a cheap kitchen tool at a dollar store. Also mix up some baking soda in the water. I made enough with this same type of contraption a while ago to fill a balloon.

Since you're capturing the gas from both plates, you're getting H2 and O2, not just the H2. Be careful handling; the mixture is explosive. Do not accumulate! If you save just the H2, it will burn, but not explode.

Great info. You might want to mention about the mixtures and add safety notes. Also, you should mention, in finite detail, what source of electric start you used to start your reaction. That would be good information to have.

Yes, hydrogen-oxygen mix collected this way proves to the formula for disaster if confined in a large volume and ignited. Luckily the bottle on the collection end left very little space above the water in the bottle, else you'll end up with an explosion. The legitimate way to do this is called collection over water or downward displacement of water or air inside an inverted test tube. Hydrogen gas, being lighter than water or air, will be collected nearly in a pure state and the pop test of its ignition by a burning splint could be performed with partially filled test tube (say if you try to ignite hydrogen and air in equal proportion, the mixture explodes, else a fully filled tube with hydrogen will burn slowly). Always remember just to collect small sample volume of hydrogen in turn, NEVER a large volume in one go.
