While some parents prefer to preserve an element of surprise upon delivery of their baby, most choose to learn the sex from their doctor as soon as they can. More recently, some are even opting for a more "festive" route: announcement in the form of a "gender party", where the boy-or-girl status is revealed in cake form for the first time—not only to the guests, but also to the parents.
The parents have the doctor's office enclose the gender of the baby in a sealed envelope. They then deliver the envelope to a bakery, and the bakery prepares either a color-coded desert—blue for boys, pink for girls—or a more elaborate, sculpted "baby cake".
The baby cake is somewhat of a phenomenon on the internet, beginning with this video by Michelle Wibowo, back in 2006. There are some things that just shouldn't be edible—cigarettes and beer cans, obese ladies, brides—and it's safe to say the newborn falls into this category, as well. Which is why so many people are delighted and thrilled when the cake is mutilated (and why it looks so awesomely wrong stored in the refrigerator).
Ironically, the creator (and slasher) of the baby cake shown above and below is Dan Gentle, a talented cake sculptor.
