Use the polygon bridge tool in Maya

This Maya 3D software lesson demonstrates the bridge tool and shows some if its uses. The bridge tool is a polygonal modeling tool that allows you to connect surfaces, like a bridge. The bridge tool works with edges of existing pieces of polygonal geometry and creates a surface to attach them accordingly. See how to use the bridge tool when modeling in Maya in this tutorial.

When the divisions are set to 0 to create a flat plane, the video says that the edges need to be merged. Could someone please explain to me how this is done. I am struggling because the two edges are in the same place so selecting them both consecutively using the merge edge tool is not possible.

Thank you in advance.
