Next learn the proper hand position for getting your dog to sit: place a treat just above your dog's nose then move your hand over his back. Sitting is the first step to lying down, so one your dog has mastered sitting you can move on. A different hand position will help your dog lie down: place a treat beneath his chin, then move your hand to the ground. Once your dog is obedient and an sit and lie down on command, you are ready to teach him to "wait" or "stay."
