The JB Knot has variously been claimed to have been invented in France in the 1970's and also appears in a United States Navy manual from 1917. This hitch is mainly used as an abseiling aid. It can be released under load, although this makes it dangerous and it much be mastered before extensive use. The addition of further wraps make it even more secure.
