This video tutorial will show you how to test and replace your car's ported or thermal vacuum switch. A PVS (Ported Vacuum Switch) or TVS (Thermal Vacuum Switch) is used to control distributor vacuum advances, the EGR system, the heated air intake system and canister purge systems. First, visually inspect the switch, then test the switch by connecting the vacuum pump and the vacuum gauge. Now apply twenty inches of vacuum, start the engine, inspect for change in the vacuum from the pump to the gauge when engine is cold and when engine is hot. To replace the switch, begin with a cool engine, drain the radiator coolant, disconnect the vacuum hoses, remove the switch, compare the old switch with the new one, apply pipe sealant to the threads, install the new switch, reconnect the vacuum hoses and refill the cooling system.
