How to stake a coleus plant It's a good idea to stake a plant at the same time as potting it. Make the stake a little taller than the plant. Place the stake close to the plant but not so close as to nick the crown. Use something soft to tie the plant to the stake. Wrap a figure 8 pattern so there's an X between the stem and the stake. This X keeps the stem from rubbing the stake. Pat down the soil and water.
