Watch this 8 part video and learn how to serve step by step. The way you stand during your service motion is called the stance. The stance is important because how you stand affects how your body moves later in the shot. The 2nd step of the serve is the toss and the backswing. You need an accurate toss so you can have a consistent service motion. Taking your racket back in a specific way will allow you to swing forward properly. The 3rd of the serve is to transfer your weight correctly during your preparation. This motion concludes when your weight is centered equally on the balls of your feet and your knees are fully bent. The trophy pose is the completion of your preparation. From this position, you are ready to swing. The timing of the trophy pose is very important. Your tossing arm should be fully extended, hitting arm in the "L" and your knees fully bent with the weight centered equally on the balls of your feet. Dropping the racket behind your back is also commonly called the "scratch back position" and it's part of swinging toward the ball. As you drop the racket down behind your back, your tossing arm begins to fall. The leg push accompanies the racket drop -- the two happen at the same time. You should be fully pushed off your legs by the time the racket has dropped straight down behind your back. From the racket drop position, swing up on edge toward the tennis ball. At the last second, pronate your wrist and make contact with the ball. Pronating is very similar to giving someone a high-five. From contact, follow through so that the racket points down at the court. At the same time, kick your back leg up in the air. Complete your follow through by bringing the racket around to the other side of your body.
