Since deer are too big to weigh, they're measured by scoring the rack. You can do this yourself for fun. If you think your trophy could qualify for an award or record, an official measurer has to do the scoring for you. First, count the number of points on each antler. This rack has 8 left and 7 right. Next, using a flexible steel tape measure, record the distance between the tips of the two branches; the greatest spread on the rack; and the inside spread of the main beams. Then measure and record the length of each point. And finally, measure the circumference of the main beam in four different places. All those measurements are totaled to come up with the final score. Boone and Crockett lists the world record whitetail at 213 5/8. Pope and young lists the world record taken with a bow at 204 4/8. Watch this how-to video to score your deer.
