Rinse volumetric glassware in the chemistry lab

Find out how everything in a chemistry lab works, from pipettes to burners to recrystallization to storage. You'll get precise instructions on how to work and perform certain scientific duties in the chem lab, whether it's chemical or just ordinary high school science.

Watch this video on how to rinse volumetric glassware in the chemistry lab, with a standard solution that is. As an example of how to rinse glassware with a standard solution, the movie explains the rinsing of a volumetric pipette just before use.

The glassware that is used for measurement of liquid volumes such as burettes, volumetric pipette, volumetric flasks, measuring cylinders, and conical measures are called as the volumetric glassware.

In order to avoid a volume disorder, the volumetric glassware should not be dried by heating. Instead, wet glassware should be rinsed with the liquid to be measured just before use.

When a sample solution is transferred into glassware wet with water, the few drops of water remaining on the glassware causes decrease of the concentration of the solution. On the other hand, the concentration does not change when the solution is added to glassware that is rinsed and wet with the solution.

When an aqueous solution is prepared in a volumetric flask, the solution is eventually diluted with water. Therefore, a flask wet with water can be used without the rinsing operation.
