Remove binding from art books for scanning images

Here is a short video tutorial which demonstrates how to debind books using a hair dryer. You may need to take books apart for detailed scanning projects. However, this is a destructive process which will destroy your book. The hair dryer method is a fairly failsafe method of removing binding from books.

I had a similar project, removing the binding from a textbook for scanning, but it was hardbound and this de-gluing method was not useful. I finally asked for help at a graphic arts supply store (Charette, Woburn MA) and was amazed to hear they had a guillotine cutter that could remove the spine in one quick cut. Cost me $5 and 5 minutes (beyond the 1.5h to get to Woburn and back).
