Play rhythmically on electric guitar like Paul Gilbert

If you're a musician in need of some lessons, there's no better way to learn than with MusicRadar's so-called "Tuition" instructions. Although the title tuition is misleading, this video class is anything but costly, because it's free, right here. Whether you're looking for help with your voice, bass, electric guitar, drums, guitar effects, piano, Logic Pro or production techniques, Music Radar is here to show you the way.

Paul Gilbert is one of the world's premier guitarists. Known for his work with Mr. Big and Racer X, Paul possesses god-like technique, and he's a fantastic teacher to boot. Paul demonstrates how anchoring a solo around a rhythm can make things far more musical.

This video tutorial will show you how to play rhythmically on electric guitar like Paul Gilbert. The basic idea is to play a muted rhythm idea and then improvise along to it. This is easier said than done, but perhaps the easiest approach is to start as Paul does: with one note. This is actually quite difficult for most guitarists, and it can be particularly difficult for shredders who may be used to tearing up and down the fretboard without pause.
