Play pentatonic legato on guitar like Paul Gilbert

If you're a musician in need of some lessons, there's no better way to learn than with MusicRadar's so-called "Tuition" instructions. Although the title tuition is misleading, this video class is anything but costly, because it's free, right here. Whether you're looking for help with your voice, bass, electric guitar, drums, guitar effects, piano, Logic Pro or production techniques, Music Radar is here to show you the way.

Paul Gilbert is one of the world's premier guitarists. Known for his work with Mr. Big and Racer X, Paul possesses god-like technique, and he's a fantastic teacher to boot. If you're stuck at a certain speed and want to get some rip-roaring licks under your fingers, a simple pentatonic pattern can be the answer.

This video tutorial will show you how to play pentatonic legato patterns on guitar like Paul Gilbert. To begin with, you should be able to see the familiar A minor pentatonic scale lurking beneath Paul's lick; if not, familiarise yourself with the scale and get practising. The pattern itself is eight notes in length, and is essentially repeated in the same manner across the remaining strings. All Paul does is take the basic pattern and move it up one string. Your only job then is to compensate for the shape of the scale and adjust your fingers accordingly.
