Perform basic cycle maintenance

Perform basic cycle maintenance

Before hitting the trails, make sure your bicycle is up for the road ahead using these tips.
You Will Need
* An air pressure gauge
* An Allen wrench
* A socket wrench
* Spray lubricant
* A stainless steel pad

Step 1: Inspect frame for cracks
Inspect the bike frame for cracks, especially around the welds. Any cracks should be immediately repaired.

Step 2: Check tires and air pressure
Check the tires for bulges, cuts, or torn treads. Then, using an air pressure gauge, make sure the tire is properly inflated.

Every tire will have the proper inflation amount written on the tire wall.

Step 3: Check for loose bolts and screws
Check for loose bolts and screws using an Allen wrench or socket wrench. Don’t over tighten, but apply firm pressure until snug.

Step 4: Inspect and lubricate chain
Inspect the chain and gears for excess dirt or wear. Clean and lubricate using spray lubricant.

Step 5: Check and clean brakes
Check your brakes by spinning each tire and depressing the hand brake. The tire should stop instantly. Clean the brake heads using a stainless steel pad.

Step 6: Inspect helmet
Inspect your helmet for cracks and wear, and make sure the helmet pads provide comfort and proper fit.

Fact: Air-filled tires were first used on bicycles and then later made the leap to automobiles.
