The bowtie is a string manipulation move where the strings actually hold the sticks facing towards eachother. the idea is that you are using the strings of the opposing stick to tie the other stick into being suspended.
The most common way to make sure not to result in a big messy tangle of strings is to catch the string as if you were going to do a thumbsplit. If you catch the strings in a catchlink formation, it will result in a huge knot. You also have to make sure you are securing the string in the right direction, otherwise it will fall apart.
