Perform a biopsy of the prostate

This medical how-to video demonstrates how a biopsy of the prostate is conducted with ultrasound guidance. In this procedure, the patient is asked to lie on his side in the "fetal crouch" position.

Trans-rectal ultrasound is performed by placing a small lubricated probe in the rectum. Sound waves emitted from the probe generate a picture of the prostate and may also show areas of concern. A spring-loaded needle is attached to the ultrasound probe and enters the prostate through the rectum. The needle usually takes 6-12 tissue samples from the prostate.

Once these samples are removed, they are examined under a microscope to see if they contain any cancerous cells.
