i screwed up as well, but I am trying it at a lower temp, looks good so far, no where near as messy, if you have a gas stove, turn it down A LOT

Most probably boild it to fast and to hot. Slow down take your time you have to stire it all the time almost none stop. I sugest a thicker pot or coile a cloth hanger and place it between the range and your pot so it is not in direct contact with the stove. when you get a white gew or thick foam stop let it cool that will make your "cristals"

all else fails ebay :-) around 15 $ for 1 lbs
and that will make a looooot.
