Watch this science video tutorial from Nurd Rage on how to make water activated flash powder from silver nitrate and magnesium.
WARNING: DO NOT TRY THIS YOURSELF! We are experienced chemists and only other experienced chemists should try this. We are not responsible for any injury as a result of this experiment.
In the first flash, we combine half a micromole of silver nitrate along with three mole equivalents of magnesium and then place on top of a fire resistant support.
If you don't know what a micromole is, you are NOT a chemist and shouldn't be trying this.
A drop of water activates the powder. This causes a strongly exothermic redox reaction that is hot enough to ignite the mixture.
The second flash uses double the amount and the third flash uses quadruple the amount.
