C For Chemistry delves into the chemistry of science experiments. This chemist knows what he's talking about. These chemistry experiments are not only fun, but very educational for all of those interested in scientific chemical reactions and properties.
This video tutorial will show you how to make a purple flame with potassium chlorate and sugar.
HOW TO:
1. Add potassium chlorate into a crucible (ready to be dispose).
2. Add powdered sugar to it and mix well.
3. Add drops of concentrated sulfuric acid and stay away.
CHEMISTRY OF IT:
This is a very famous Pyro-Chem reaction, which produce spectacular purplish flame when conc. sulfuric acid is added to the mixture. The principle behind the initiation could be complex, but mainly because of chlorine dioxide formed and medium supplied by conc. sulfuric acid.
