According to Jewish tradition, after the Maccabees’ victory over the Greeks, there was only enough oil to burn for one day in the Temple. Miraculously the oil burned for eight days. Lighting the Hanukkah menorah commemorates this miracle.
You will need:
a menorah with eight candleholders, plus one for the shamash
9 candles
matches or a lighter
Remember, placing a menorah in a window for passerbys to see fulfills the commandment to publicize the miracle. Never use the Hanukkah candles to light each other.
Interesting fact: Since oil is so important to the holiday, Hanukkah foods are often fried.
