mr sullivan spoke of following the local codes during the beginning of his demonstration while reading the instruction booklet that came with the ceiling fan. although his methods for building that fan may've been awkward, he did put it together correctly... however, all wiring shall be enclosed in a box and in this case it requires a suitable ceiling fan box which are rated for the weight of a motorized fixture. mr sullivan simply attached that thing directly to the ceiling, which is absolutely incorrect. from mr sullivan's own mouth: hire an electrical contractor! a licensed electrician would know what to do, regardless of how old a building is. article 300.15 of the National Electrical Code (page 132) tells us where a box is required: ...a box shall be installed at each conductor splice point, outlet point, switch point, junction point, termination point, or pull point... basically, that means mr sullivan needs to install a fan box. not doing so is incorrect and not following local codes. safety first, right mr sullivan? artical 90.1 of the NEC says the purpose of the Code is the practical safeguarding of persons and property from the hazards arising from the use of electricity.
