"The intense ecstasy of heroin lasts a few hours..."

My experience was there really wasn't any "intense ecstasy" from doing smack, or even slight ecstasy, or any ecstasy at all. I actually thought I'd been ripped off the first time I used it because the effects were so very much less than what I'd expected from big ol' bad heroin. But I had a lot left (relatively speaking) so I continued experimenting for several days. I smoked it the first time, then snorted it dry (well, tried to anyway), then snorted it wet the 3rd day, and finally injected what I had left on the 4th day. I puked and puked and puked and briefly thought I was gonna die...but I still didn't think I'd gotten high. I soon discovered that heroin's reputation isn't because of how you feel when you use it, but how you feel when you stop using it. The only thing intense about heroin is the withdrawals, and that's anything but ecstatic.

I strongly support responsible use of recreational drugs....but there is absolutely nothing recreational about opiates. Especially heroin. If you're hooked and don't want to be, you should definitely consider methadone. It helped me kick my addiction almost painlessly. So much so that I figured it'd be OK to use just enough more to get hooked again a few weeks later. I'd figured if that happened I could just get back on methadone. (I wouldn't be the 1st junkie to relapse.) Instead, I got to detox in jail (no methadone there, not even by prescription). Never touched it again after that.
