Do a long tail, double or continental knitting cast-on

Do a long tail, double or continental knitting cast-on

The technique in this how-to video creates a nice, stretch-y edge that works well for stockinette stitch or for ribbing. Easy to knit from, easy to pick up stitches from, this is also the fastest cast-on around, once you get the hang of it. It's even faster than a Single Cast-On when you take into account that this method creates an already knitted row. Purl the first row if working stockinette on straight needles, because of the already-knitted row this creates. This method is recommended for beginners, or anyone. Calculate 1/2" - 1" of yarn per stitch for the "long tail" that is required for this cast-on method. Let the tail dangle from the thumb of the left hand, so that it can untwist occasionally as you go (the thumb side gets twisted). Watch this video knitting tutorial and learn how to do the long tail, double, or continental cast-on.

I really appreciate people making these videos, but I wish the video didn't have constant movement like one is performing a magician's trick. I am trying to learn a process and pulling at the yarn and other unnecessary hand movements distract me from learning as quickly. I am trying to follow what the demonstrator's hand is doing thinking ok I do this, then the hands jump to another spot on the yarn and I wonder...or do I do that. I find myself watching the video over and over and over.
