Front Walkover - Artistic Gymnastics

In this lesson you will learn how to do the front walkover. Walkovers are usually only practiced by girls, because a lot of back flexibility is needed. Before you try the front walkover, you should learn how to go into the bridge from the handstand.

Technical description: Front Walkover - Artistic Gymnastics

* Stand upright with your arms pointing straight up. Head and upper arms stick together during the whole exercise.
* Put your hands down like if you were doing a handstand, but swing your right leg up hard and spread your legs. The left leg leaves the floor as late as possible. (this helps to split the legs) Both knees and the elbows stay extended always.
* Put the right leg back to the floor and keep the left leg stretched up as far as possible. The bigger the split, the easier it is to lift you upper body back up.
* Line up your left leg with your trunk and your arms, so that the weight of your leg pulls up your upper body.(contract abs slightly)

Trainer advice: Front Walkover - Artistic Gymnastics

* If you can already do the front handspring, it will be easier to learn the front walkover
* Shoulder flexibility is important for the front walkover.
* EXERCISE: Go from a handstand to a bridge and then try to stand up onto your feet.
