Back Walkover - Gymnastics

In this lesson you will learn how to do the back walkover. The back walkover is usually practiced by girls. (because a lot of back flexibility is needed for walkovers) Before you try this exercise, you should know how to bend back into the bridge from a standing position.

Technical description: Gymnastic Back Walkover

* Go down into the bridge ( see bending back into a bridge instruction ) and lift one leg shorly before you hands touch the floor. If this is difficult to balance for you, (because you will finish the bridge on one leg) finish the bridge on both legs, wait a few seconds and then throw up one leg. Spread your legs as far as you can and extend both knees. Also try to keep your elbows straightened.
* The middle of the back walkover is a handstand-frontsplit. Put down one leg.
* Line up the second leg with your trunk and your arms.
* Finish in the same position you started from. (hands up)

Trainer advice: Gymnastic Back Walkover

* You can land on one leg or on both legs.
* You can learn how to go down into the bridge with spotters, so you can also learn the back walkover with spotters.
* Learning the back walkover first can also help you if you want to learn the back handspring.
* TRAINING METHOD: Do a bridge with your feet on a plateau, so that you hands are lower than you feet. That way it will be easier to throw over your legs.
