Create a beer cellar

Create a beer cellar

Just like wine, some beer gets better with age. Learn how to properly store and age beer for optimal flavor.
You Will Need
* A cool, dark location
* Beers suitable for aging
* Boxes or shelving
* Labels

Step 1: Pick location
Select the best spot for your beer cellar. An ideal location may be a closet or a niche in your basement, with little to no light and minimal temperature fluctuations.

The best temperature for aging beer is between 50 and 60 degrees Fahrenheit.

Step 2: Select beers
Choose the beer you wish to age. Beer suitable for aging generally includes Belgian ales, old ales, imperial stouts, and barley wines.

Step 3: Store your beer
Store your beer upright in boxes or on sturdy shelves.

Step 4: Label beer
Label your beer according to date stored and purchase location.

Step 5: Compare aged beer
Purchase two bottles of each beer. Drink one immediately, and then compare it to the aged beer after six to 12 months.

Fact: In the Middle Ages, workers were often paid with jugs of beer.
