How to combat oily hair

If you've got an oil slick on your head by noon most days, try these strategies to keep grease under control.

* Witch hazel
* Mouthwash

Step 1: Use a clear shampoo
Use a see-through shampoo instead of a thicker, cream-style variety. Clear shampoos clean up oil better and won’t leave residue on your scalp.

Step 2: Only condition the tips
When using conditioner, apply sparingly to just the tips of your hair and leave the roots alone. Otherwise, you risk triggering more oil production by clogging up the pores in your scalp.

A scalp massage can help get rid of excess oil and improve circulation. Plus, it feels really good.

Step 3: Use beer instead of setting products
Hairspray, gel, and mousse can clog pores. Use beer as a final rinse before getting out of the shower to calm the scalp and give your hair a smooth and polished look.

Step 4: Use astringent after washing
Astringent can soak up excess oil and cleanse the pores. Mix together equal parts witch hazel and antibacterial mouthwash and apply to the scalp with some cotton pads. Don’t rinse out.

Step 5: Dry your hair in the opposite direction
Create more fullness by lifting your hair up at the roots and brushing hair upward while you blow-dry. This stops the oil from matting down and flattening your style.

Step 6: Brush gently
Use gentle brush strokes to avoid distributing the oil from the root to the tips. Vigorously brushing can trigger oil production. Now admire your healthy hair, minus the oil slick!
