Choose your college major

Choose your college major

In this video tutorial, learn when most universities and colleges typically make students declare a major. Find out why certain universities make students select a major directly out of high school. Also, find out the best options and advice for selecting a major when having to declare before you're ready.

Choosing Your College Major Video Overview

1. When to Declare?

For most colleges, you do not have to declare a major until the end of your sophomore year.

If you have no idea what to major in when applying to colleges, it may be helpful to choose an undeclared major and pick a sampling of classes to see what you enjoy and what you excel at, and then declare your major later towards the end of your sophomore year.

2. Declaring a Major

Some schools force you to declare a major on your admissions application. In this case, it is advisable to look within yourself and, if you are better at and enjoy math and science classes, you may want to major in engineering, math or a science field. If you are better at and enjoy English or social science classes, you may want to choose a humanities or liberal arts type of major.
