The poinsettia is a native of Mexico and Southern California; its popular name is derived from the ambassador to Mexico, Joel Roberts Poinsett, who was first return this plant to his greenhouses in South Carolina. It's become a popular Christmas-time plant due to its natural blossoming period, which falls in the winter.
