Become a lawyer

Becoming a lawyer is a long process beginning with taking the LSAT and applying to law schools. Watching this video can establish the steps you should take as a graduate and undergraduate student to testing out and deciding which field of law you'd like to practice as a professional.

1. The Commitment to a Law Career and School
* It is important to be careful before committing $100,000 in tuition and three years of study to get into a law career. Make sure you can live in the work
* Completion of the video establishes that you should do the most you can with your legal education. Get into highest ranking law school you can with the highest LSAT and undergraduate grades possible. Legal and debate experience may help. Compete in your school's law review.
2. Exploring Fields of Law
* Get a summer job with the type of firm you'd like to practice, whether it's real estate, civil, tax or family law. This is a great opportunity to test it out and make networking contacts, which is key to your future career.
* Strive to be public or in house counsel after establishing experience. In house lawyers don't have to work under billable hours as opposed to law firms. While compensation is low, some are content with the rewards of nonprofit law.
3. Consulting Law Experts and Exploring Law Careers
* If you're still not sure what type of law to practice, talk with attorneys. Ask what they like or don't like about the types of law they practice. Work as a law firm assistant and see what you think.
* Explore what kind of law you'd like to practice. Being a tax lawyer is very different from being a civil lawyer or family lawyer.
