How to add and preview transitions in iMovie

Clicking on the transitions tab will open a list of transitions. If you click on a transition, you will see a small preview in the box above the list of transitions. Among the options you can use to customize the transitions are transition speed and location. Once you are satisfied with your transition, place the playhead between the two clips you want to apply a transition to, then drag the transition down to the timeline.
