Getting new and curious members to your congregation consists of utilizing many strategies. One strategy that can be very successful is that of using church signs.

Step 1 Get church message signs

If you don't have them, you need them. Make sure they are legible from across the street or from a passing automobile. They should be easy to update on a regular basis - both from the point of view of accessing the sign and being able to change the message.

Step 2 Keep the sign simple

It should be welcoming but not overwhelming. Suggest that passers-by drop in for service or a special event. Specify the time (and day if not Sunday). It is important to make an open invitation without conditions.

Step 3 Keep the sign fresh

Maintain your sign. Few people will react well to a tatty and fading sign.

Step 4 Be pithy

If you do include a message, keep it short and positive. Use sustaining and caring quotes from the Bible or from renowned Christians. Even great lines from the pastor are suitable as long as they are short. Rotate such lines regularly.

Tips

  • Sign content could include short Bible verses, some happy church community news (e.g. Vera's had a baby!) or something about a special upcoming event.
  • Remember that church signs give out several signals: "We are open", "We are here" and "We are active". Keep those signs in good condition and up to date!
  • Locate signs where they are clearly visible. Walk down to the sidewalk and drive by to see the effect.
  • Use tasteful colors and decorations.
  • Make sure words are spelled correctly. Misspelled words will give the impression that your church is dumb.
  • If your sign is on a street or highway, make sure it can be read, and comprehended in the time it takes a passing motorist to drive by at normal speed for your road.

Warnings

  • Avoid negative messages. These do not encourage members of the congregation. Promising eternal damnation is not inviting.
  • Avoid jokes. This also confronts people and makes them take the church less seriously. Light-heartedness is fine but joking about Christianity is not.
