This is it. You have a big poster project due soon, and you want it to be "Grade A" work. You, my friend, have come to the right place.
Step 1
Use a cutting board. Nothing is more unattractive than uneven and slanted edges on pictures and paragraphs.
Step 2
Use borders. It is always nice to step up the quality by adding a little border to whatever you will be gluing onto the poster. Take a piece of construction paper that is about 1/2 of an inch larger on each side than what you are gluing on. Just glue the picture to the paper to the poster. Viola!
Step 3
Keep text to a minimum. Let's face it. When people look at a poster, they want eye candy, not information. Keep the amount of writing to the lowest amount possible through using bullet points and captions. No one wants to stand around reading a 12 paragraph essay on a poster.
Step 4
Use corresponding colors. Color has a HUGE affect on the message you want to portray to your audience. If you are showing something sad, like the Murder of Emmett Till, then you want dark sad colors or red with black to portray anger. If you are showing the Hippie Era, then you want to use bright, psychedelic colors. Do not use colors that will induce vomit, like red and pink with orange or brown with black. You know what I mean.
Step 5
Type it, don't write it. Most people have REALLY bad handwriting. So, use the computer that you have been blessed with to type up your text. Use a font that people can actually read.
Step 6
Use good pictures. Unless you are a super awesome artist, I suggest you use pictures from the internet on your poster. You might be surprised at the variety there is. If you are a super awesome artist, then go on and draw to your hearts content.
Step 7
Do a good job gluing. When you glue something down, REALLY GLUE IT DOWN!!!!! Do not leave corners sticking up willy nilly and eliminate air pockets.
