The Fleurieu Peninsula is located in South Australia. It is 40 minutes by car from Adelaide, the State's capital city. The Fleurieu Peninsula is famous for its wineries, amazing food, clean, white beaches and even for its camel treks. If you're visiting South Australia for a short or long stay, set aside a day or two to visit this delightful, gastronomic region.

Step 1

Fly to Adelaide. You will arrive at Adelaide International Airport, where you can hire a car if wished.

Step 2

Choose whether to self-drive to the Fleurieu Penisula or take a tour. Both are on offer and it really depends on how much time you have available and what interests you most. Driving in this region is very easy.

Step 3

Select the style of accommodation best suited to your needs. There is a wide variety of accommodation possibilities, ranging from bed and breakfasts, caravan parks, campgrounds and motels. It is also possible to rent self-contained cottages in some areas.

Step 4

Follow the "Produce Trail". This is a tourist trail designed to take you through some of the gourmet delights this region has on offer. You will be able to sample and purchase locally grown and produced food, as well as tasting the many wines on offer. Wineries in the region can be found in McLaren Vale, Langhorne Creek, Currency Creek and Southern Fleurieu.

Step 5

Try a camel trek along the beach. This is a popular activity along the Goolwa Beach. It is a peaceful and uplifting experience at once and you will get to see great ocean views and birdlife.

Step 6

Take a ride on the StreamRanger Cockle Train. Train enthusiasts will be thrilled with this ride, as will the rest of the family!

Step 7

Visit Victor Harbor. Take a ride on the old Victor tram (streetcar) still driven by a horse. It is one of the few remaining horse-drawn trams in the world. The tram takes you across to Granite Island, home of a colony of fairy penguins. If you miss the tram, you can still walk across the causeway. Keep an eye out for whales as you go.

Step 8

Enjoy a number of other great tourist attractions of the Fleurieu region:

  • Bushwalking (hiking/tramping) - there are many trails available, including in the Deep Creek Conservation Park.
  • Surfing - there is plenty of surf to keep you occupied
  • Diving - there are numerous wrecks to dive to, including a war wreck of the HMAS-Hobart. Look for the Leafy Sea Dragon
  • River cruises
  • Shopping
  • Whale watching

Tips

  • This region boasts an amazing array of food: yabbies, olives, olive oil, almonds, wine, cockles, cheese, lamb, venison, chocolate, seafood and coffee. It is truly a gastronomic delight.
  • Bakeries are in most of the small towns and can provide an easy, affordable lunch in the way of sandwiches, buns and drinks.
  • Make sure you have your country's driving licence in order to rent a vehicle if you choose to self-drive.

Warnings

  • Driving is British style - keep to the left.
  • Be sure to have a designated driver if tasting wines. Or, join an organised tour group.
