Step 1

Walk to the cemetery. The cemetery can be reached after touring Victoria University by foot. Leave Victoria University on the Salamanca Road side and walk along Salamanca Road until you reach Mount Street.

Step 2

Walk up Mount Street until you reach the Mount Street Cemetery.

Step 3

Walk among the tombstones and read the inscriptions. Look for Father J P O'Reilly, who was Wellington's first resident Catholic priest.

Step 4

After taking in the names of settlers past, take a moment to enjoy the amazing view offered by the Mount Street Cemetery. You will be able to see the city and the harbour, with some good photo opportunities on a nice day.

Tips

  • The original cemetery size was three acres. Two acres were later subdivided and are now occupied by residences and the university. It is thought that the burials only happened in the remaining acre.

Things You'll Need

  • Walking shoes
  • Map of Wellington
  • Camera
  • Raincoat if weather is wet or threatening; Wellington can be very windy, so don't take any chances (and umbrellas do not work in the wind!)
