By default, the "Links" toolbar in Internet Explorer is hidden, but right-clicking anywhere on the toolbars shows an option to activate it. But, what is it and why would you need it?

Well, it's really a handy toolbar for all the links you want quick access to.

Step 1

Right Click anywhere on the toolbar area of Internet Explorer, and activate (tick) the "Links" toolbar. It should then appear amongst the other toolbars, possibly in the bottom-right corner. Right-click again and unlock the toolbars if necessary, then drag the Links toolbar into a more accessible area; my own Links toolbar is just below the Menu bar.

Step 2

At the moment, the toolbar is empty, but you can add your most popular sites to this bar, making navigation to them quick and easy. To do this, click on the favourites menu and look at the list of favourites. In amongst them is a "Links" folder. If you can't see it or you've deleted it, choose "Organize Favourites" at the top and create a new folder called "Links".

Step 3

Next, choose your most popular or most frequently visited links from the favourites list, and drag or move them into the Links folder within favourites. You should immediately see the link appear on the Links toolbar.

Step 4

Follow the same procedure for all the links you'd like to have quick access to via the Links toolbar.

Step 5

Tips

  • If you have more than just a few links on the Links toolbar, you might like to edit their names to make room. Simply right click on the button or choose rename from within the favourites list and edit it to a suitable abbreviation. I have perhaps 8 to 10 quick access buttons on my Links toolbar for sites I visit frequently and still have room for quite a few more.
  • If you have a file or program that you use a lot, you can also put that on your toolbar.
