sticky notes

Step 1

Get a pad or two of sticky notes. They are also known as "Post-It" notes.

Step 2

Write messages. The most self-evident use is to write messages on it. Peel it off and stick it to folders, chairs, computer screens etc., wherever the person reading the note will find it. Use sticky notes to leave messages on a door about your return time or whereabouts if you have to pop out. This is useful for office doors, for the back door if neighbors come calling or for business doors when you pop out for a lunch break. Naturally, do not do this at home if you have security problems.

Step 3

Use them to mark a place. Reading a long textbook and want to remember where that important point is? Stick a note in it.

Step 4

Keep track of all the tasks you have to do at work or in study. It can be useful to color code your tasks and place the notes in an order that helps you to keep track of all the things you need to do.

Step 5

Use them as temporary design elements that can be moved around. Sticky notes can be really useful for people who need to work with designs on paper or storyboards that need to be moved around, such as theater designers, writers, artists, graphic artists, advertisers etc. They're also great for mind-mapping when studying or brainstorming.

Step 6

Add a sticky note to food items to let people know any number of things, such as date of use, who the food is for, what the ingredients are, and so on.

Step 7

Use sticky notes for motivational purposes. If you need to motivate yourself to learn something, or to change something, sticky notes can be your best friend. Consider such things as:

  • Quitting smoking, chocolate or some other habit. Use sticky notes around the house or office to remind you to avoid those cigarettes!
  • Learning a new language. Stick new words on the relevant items in your house of office. For example, if you were learning French, you could stick the word "miroir" on your mirror and "chaise" on your chair. Since you see these sticky notes time and time again as you move around the house, you will soon learn the new words.

Step 8

Make an origami structure from sticky notes. Using an origami pattern, try using sticky notes in place of origami paper. You may have to experiment a lot to see what works best and which patterns work.

Step 9

Make a decorative sticky notes collage. This can cheer up an otherwise dull work or study corner with little effort and maximum effect.

Step 10

Dress up in sticky notes. For fast party or Halloween improvisation, sticky notes might be the solution. They also make great scales on costumes of dinosaurs, reptiles etc. and as bird feathers.

Step 11

Use sticky notes for practical jokes:

  • Cover somebody else's car with sticky notes. It is a time-consuming but effective and hilarious prank.
  • Stick the notes all over a sleeping person.
  • Make a face.
  • Annoy a coworker.

Step 12

Play games with sticky notes. It's fun at school to play the "do something to me sticky note game". Write the words "XXX me" (e.g., kick me, laugh at me, say donkey to me) on a sticky note and stick it to someone. When they find it, tell them to stick it on someone else. Then that person will stick it to some other person. Be careful of making the suggestions too negative or unfriendly, as this game is supposed to be in good humor.

Step 13

Make a sticky note Christmas decoration chain. Probably best left to those with great patience.

Tips

  • It might be funny if you cover yourself with sticky notes rather than somebody else. Ask a friend to help with your back.
  • Sticky notes and "Post-It"s come in a variety of colors and styles. Shapes include apples, teddy bears, stars and leaves. Colors are usually yellow, orange, lime green, hot pink, blue, purple and pastels of these shades.
  • Sticky notes make great shopping lists. They are compact and can be stuck inside a wallet or purse for easy retrieval.
  • A fun way to pass notes with sticky notes is try and make a little envelope with a sticky note and then put another folded sticky note in it.

Warnings

  • If you're going to sticky note somebody's car, keep the notes away from the windshield, vents and rear view mirrors if the car is meant to be driven this way. It is best if the car is not driven, however, as the sticky notes will fly off and become litter.
