A bobby pin (also called a Kirby Grip) is a hairpin that holds hair strands and hairstyles in place. They are usually plain and come in various colors, to match the hair. Their original purpose was to be invisible, and not noticed, but eventually they became decorated, jewelled and ornate.
Step 1
Place the bobby pin next to the section of hair you wish to pin with a finger. Make sure the ridged side is facing up.
Step 2
Hook a finger under the top of the bobby pin.
Step 3
Slide it in, securing the section of hair.
Tips
Curl bangs or sections of hair and hold them up elaborately with bobby pins. Use them to put your hair up in pincurls. - Bobby pins make great lock picks.
Cross two bobby pins to more securely hold up the hair. - Bobby pins can be used to secure a hairstyle, such as a bun or simply putting the hair half up.
To make a great necklace string bobby pins onto a similarly colored chain. - Bobby pins come in all sorts of colors. If you're blonde, get the light- colored bobby pins. If you're brunette, get brown bobby pins and if you have black hair, obviously get black bobby pins. This way it blends in with your hair. They even have blonde-ish-brown-ish ones and other kinds for any color of hair.
Warnings
- If you have exceptionally thick hair a single bobby pin may become twisted. Try using two or a different hair clip.
- If you are not careful an open bobby pin may spring closed.
- Avoid poking your eyes or the tender skin underneath your fingernail with a bobby pin.
