This article will show you a step by step way to teach your horse to sidepass.

Step 1

Teach your horse the forehand turn.

  • Make your horse stand still while you are mounted on it.
  • Slide your right or left foot back (depending on which direction you choose to go).
  • Give slight pressure. Your horse will move away from the pressure, therefore making your horse move his/her hindquarters around.
  • Praise your horse once he gets it right, and everytime he gets it right after that. Continue until the horse has it down completely.

Step 2

Teach your horse the haunch turn.

  • Make sure he or she is standing still while you are mounted.
  • Move your foot a little forward, getting your horse to move away from the pressure also.
  • Reign your horse in the same direction you choose to make them go. Once your horse gets it right the first time, praise your horse and repeat until your horse understands fully.

Step 3

Put them together, therefore making your horse move sideways into a side pass. You will need to decide which way you choose to go.

  • Make sure your horse is at a full stop when you start. #*Combine both the haunch and the forehand turn. Do this by putting your right foot back and giving pressure, while you are neck reigning your horse to the left as well. It is important you do these steps at the same time! Your horse may get confused at first, but just keep at it.

Tips

  • Praise your horse regularly!
    • Don't overdo it. Your horse will sour on you and get annoyed!
  • Make sure that you have complete control over your horse on the ground
  • Do this every time you ride to practice and make it more natural to your horse and you!
