This article teaches you to teach your dog to bark or howl on command.

Step 1 Start by playing with your dog

When it is a little more energized, put it behind a gate or some sort of barrier that it cannot jump over or walk through.

Step 2 Get out the dog treats

When your dog sees the treats, it will want to come over and eat them. When it is teased, it gets antsy and jealous, so it will bark or howl.

Step 3 Stand a distance from your dog and the gate

Show the dog the treat and then put it behind your back. Wait for your dog to get jealous.

Step 4 Keep saying, "Speak", or "Bark", ect

Make sure to say the word in the same tone of voice everytime. When your dog finally reacts and speaks, praise it and hand it a treat. The dog will think that when you say the word, the dog will bark and it will be rewarded.

Step 5 Practice, for a few minutes everyday, do this regimen

The dog will get better and better at it and you and your dog will grow closer.

Tips

  • Beagles, Basset Hounds, and some Dachshunds (all small hounds also) are fun to teach this trick to because they will howl at you! So Funny!
  • This may not work for lazy or unresponsive dogs.

Warnings

  • Don't overwork your dog!
  • Once your dog learns that howling produces rewards, it may begin to bark or howl when it is hungry or wants a treat. This can be annoying.

Things You'll Need

  • Dog
  • Dog Treats or Biscuits
