For many people, an encounter with a police officer is no easy task. Here are a few things you can do to make sure you leave the encounter with a warning, ticket or a lighter sentence.
Step 1
Relax. Take deep breaths. Avoid freaking out, getting angry or crying. Most officers are aware that people get nervous when dealing with them, and will be patient and understanding provided you show you are trying to be calm.
Step 2
Be polite and respectful.
Step 3
Comply with any reasonable requests, and know when you can legally say no. For example, if you're driving normally and a cop pulls you over and says they're going to search your car, say no. They cannot proceed unless they have a warrant or probable cause.
Step 4
Be truthful when answering all questions. For example, if you have had one alcoholic drink, and the officer asks if you were drinking, tell them you had one. Chances are they can smell it anyway, and if you say no, this will only lead to further problems.
