We've all been afraid of the so called monster under our bed, but we grow out of it, don't we? If you're having trouble with fear of the dark or paranormal and you wish to overcome that fear, this is the article for you!

Step 1

Become skeptical. Although human history holds an entire lore of ghosts, paranormal events, and such--none of this has held true in the face of science. Don't be afraid of something that doesn't exist.

Step 2

Harness the power of your faith. Does your faith believe in ghosts? Can a demon steal your soul? Perhaps a talk with your priest, minister, pastor, rabbi, or other clergyperson can set the record straight. He or she can help you sort out your spiritual world, and appropriate ways to view the Other World.

Step 3

Discover what your fear is exactly. Is it of a specific thing, such as a dark closet, or something more general, such as the dark? Is this fear linked with childhood trauma, or is is (seemingly) irrational? What is it that you are afraid of represent to you?

Step 4

Find a scientific explanation for whatever you fear. For example, "the dark" is only our planet rotating, noises are caused by natural nocturnal creatures, etc. With solid scientific proof, the murky realm of make-believe seems a lot less plausible. If you stop believing in your fear, it holds no power over you.

Step 5

Face your fear. Are you afraid of the basement in the dark? Then spend a night there. By going and facing your fear then nothing happening to you, you eliminate it completely.

Step 6

If you are afraid to face your fear alone, take a friend/family member who isn't superstitious at all along with you. A skeptical person will make you begin to feel skeptical yourself.

Step 7

As yourself "What are you afraid of?" One very good question is: What would a ghost really do to you? Ghosts in Western culture, by and large, do not physically attack. They can be frightening, but rarely cause injury or death. In fact, some ghosts are friendly and protective. So it seems even in folklore, ghosts tend to be scary, but will not hurt you.

Step 8

Get professional help. Find a therapist to talk to. Consult with your clergyperson. Have your friends and family support you. Remember that there no shame in your fear as long as you are trying to do something about it.

Tips

  • Don't expect your fear to disappear overnight.

Warnings

  • Remember, it's easy to decide that you want to face your fears in broad daylight, but it's a lot harder to keep your resolve when you're actually facing them. A good friends is good to have along!
