If you want to have cool, spiky hair, then this article is for you.

If you want very long spikes, please read this article or this article.

Step 1

Shampoo your hair using an appropriate shampoo formula for your hair type. Rinse the shampoo out within one minute.

Step 2

Condition your hair using an appropriate conditioning formula for your hair type. Leave it in your hair for two or three times longer than the shampoo, then rinse it out.

Step 3

Dry your hair:

  • Method One
    • Pat with a towel at first, then dry thoroughly with a hair dryer.
  • Method Two
    • Pat with a towel at first, then let your hair dry naturally.
  • Method Three
    • Dry with a towel only if you don't have a hair dryer and you're in a rush, but when your hair is nearly dry, don't rub your hair, but pat it dry in the same direction as the way it has grown.

Step 4

Brush your hair in the same direction as the way it has grown.

Step 5

Apply your chosen styling product:

  • For thin hair:
    • Hairspray should have the desired holding and shaping effect for thin hair, but another option is to use Matt Clay or putty sparingly by working a small amount in your fingers and running it through your hair. Make sure you do not use too much, one or two millilitres should be about right.
  • For normal hair:
    • Hairspray can have the desired holding and shaping effect for normal hair, but another option is to use a little more Matt Clay or putty than as for thin hair by working a small amount in your fingers (or very thinly in the palm of your hand) and running it through your hair. Make sure you do not use too much, two millilitres should be about right.
  • For thick hair:
    • Use a more permanent hair styling product - such as glue or resin - to produce the desired holding and shaping effect.
    • You can use the same method as for normal hair. The spikes may droop, but one fix is to hold the tip of the spike between your thumb and forefinger and to dry it with a high heat, low blow hair dryer. The spikes should stay in place, but you can use hairspray to be sure.

Tips

  • Make as many spikes in your hair as you want, and as thick as you want.
  • Make sure that you shave the hair on back of your neck.
  • Wash your hair daily.
  • When making spikes on back of your head, take another mirror and hold it behind you at an angle.
  • Matt Clay is an excellent option, because it's very easy to wash out, and still produces the desired effect.

Warnings

  • Be very careful with the amount of hair styling product you use, too much can ruin the texture and can make your hair unevenly spiked.
  • Be very careful to wash out all of the hair styling product you use.
  • Be aware that gelatin, glue and similar products will harden a ridiculous amount.
