The wind is cutting though your brand-new gloves. You rub them together desperately trying to get some heat into them but with no avail. Fur-lined items are best to keep your hands warm and the cold wind out. If you don’t have an extra twenty bucks to spare, handmade ones are cheaper and you can decorate them to match a hat.

Step 1

Place one hand palm side down on the paper with your thumb slightly extended. Using a marker, draw a mitten-shaped outline of your hand. Leave a ½-inch space all around Also include at least 2 inches of your wrist in the outline. Cut out two.

Step 2

Trace and cut four pieces of fleece for each hand, two pieces of fake fur for each hand.

Step 3

Pin together two pieces of fleece, a right hand and a left hand, with white thread. Stitch along the outline starting at one side of the wrist and ending on the other side. Don’t leave the bottom of the wrist open.

Step 4

Repeat with remaining pieces of fleece.

Step 5

Snip a "V”-shaped notch in the seam allowance in between the thumb and index finger. This notch will prevent the fabric in the thumb area from bunching up.

Step 6

Sew fake fur on all pieces of fleece. Match up the pieces first, then decide where the fur goes.

Step 7

You will have four pieces of fleece. The fur sticking out. Pen and sew together a right hand and left hand. Repeat, then turn them inside out.

Step 8

Cut strips of black fleece long and wide enough to make a cuff around the wrist. Leave a ¼-inch seam. Sew the short edges together with black thread.

Step 9

Slip the cuff over the wrist of the mitten and align the edge of the cuff to the open end of the mitten.

Step 10

Sew the cuff to the wrist, then flip the cuff inside out.

Warnings

  • The more you add, the thicker the fabric will be. Be careful, and use a thimble if stitching by hand.
  • You can add a face or decoration using felt and fabric glue.
