A description of how to place checkers on a backgammon board.

Step 1

Open the backgammon board and place it on a flat surface in front of you.

Step 2

Make sure you have a complete backgammon set (as listed below in Things You'll Need).

Step 3

Take out the 30 checkers of two colours (usually black and white). Count to make sure there are 15 checkers of each colour.

Step 4

Looking at the board you will see it is divided into two tables separated by a bar, and there are triangles called points on both sides of the board.

Step 5

You number the points from 1 to 24 in a clockwise direction, with point 1 being the triangle in the lower right corner of the board facing you (your home board).

Step 6

Decide who is going to play with the black checkers and who will use the white checkers.

Step 7

Using your colour checkers, place two checkers on point 24, five checkers on point 13, three checkers on point 8 and five checkers on point 6.

Step 8

Then get your opponent place their checkers using the same pattern opposite your checkers.

Tips

  • It is useful to read about the backgammon board in more detail and take a look at some pictures to assist you in setting up the board.
  • Once you understand how to set up the backgammon game board, make sure you read about how to play backgammon

Warnings

  • Make sure both players' checkers form a mirror image on the board - opposite all your checkers should be the same number of your opponents checkers.

  • backgammon board
  • 30 checkers in two different colours (15 of each colour)
  • two dice
  • two dice shakers (optional: you can roll dice by hand)
