Have you ever wanted to make a picture look old-timey? Did you ever want to give the print you made a special touch? Well now you can!

Step 1

Find a black and white print you would like to sepia tone and make sure you have bleach and sepia tone in two separate trays as well as a darkroom to access.

Step 2

Rinse the print in a tray under a running faucet for 2-3 minutes.

Step 3

Put the print in the tray filled with bleach until most of the image disappears which should be about 1-2 minutes.

Step 4

Rinse the print in the tray in the sink for a minute.

Step 5

Wash the print in the water wash in the darkroom for 3 minutes.

Step 6

Place the print in the sepia tone for 2-3 minutes, taking it out when the desired level of toning has been reached.

Step 7

Rinse the print in the tray under the faucet for one minute.

Step 8

Wash the print in the water wash in the darkroom for 10-25 minutes.

Step 9

Dry the print on a drying rack over night. Do not use any heat to dry your print as that could ruin it.

Step 10

Repeat if the desired level of tone was not reached.

Tips

  • Drip the print for 15 seconds after using the bleach and sepia tone as to not waste it.
  • Carry wet prints in a tray to avoid getting your floors or the floors of your darkroom wet.

Warnings

  • Keep the area you are working in well ventilated when working with chemicals that could be hazardous to your health.
  • Wear gloves and always wash your hands after dealing with the chemicals as they can make you sick.
