Sometimes being able to walk in high heels just isn't enough. There are desperate times that can cause the need for you to run in high heels. That's where high heel connoisers often stumble. This guide will instruct you how to run in high heels without breaking a heel AND look good.

Step 1

Put on your heels.

Step 2

To begin running, you must first have good posture. Stand up straight and place your hands about 6cm away from your sides. Point your palms to the floor and flex your fingers horizontal to the floor.

Step 3

For flat surfaces: Press the heel of your preferred foot (right foot in most people) firmly to the ground. Follow quickly with your toe. Then do this with your other foot and continue. Ensure that you keep your posture when you run, and incorporate a few hip swings into your run to make it less strenuous and to give you more 'bounce'.

Step 4

For a few steps, you will be able to mash your shoe onto the ground all at once, i.e. no heel-toe. You may find this slightly easier to do, but make sure that you don't do it too often or it can be painful and is bad for your shoes.

Step 5

Of course, when there is a call for you to run in high heels, you probably won't be running on a completely flat surface free of objects as you would inside. Learning to navigate such obstacles is the most difficult part.

Step 6

To run down steps or into a gutter, it is far easier to run on your toes. Lift the heel at least a centimetre above the ground and step down, making sure that you land with your foot in that position.

Step 7

To navigate around an object, simply change direction slightly by pivoting on your heel and continue running.

Step 8

To jump over a small object, land your preferred foot on its toe rather than heel to propel you up and kick your feet back towards your knees. Land with the full sole of each foot, both feet flat.

Step 9

To stop running, do not suddenly put both feet down as this causes damage to your shoe. Gradually slow down your run into a brisk walk, and then stop.

Tips

  • Remember to hold your head high yet look down often enough not to lose your footing.
  • Keep your posture as you run, but if doing a small jump, don't try to remain straight-backed and flexed-hands.
  • Practice this first in slow motion and then gradually get faster until you are confident enough with your technique to begin running.

Warnings

  • Running in high heels should be avoided at all costs, as it is potentially damaging to your shoe and foot.
  • Do not attempt to navigate around or over objects or run over uneven surfaces until you feel that you are experienced enough.

Things You'll Need

  • Comfortable high heels
  • Preferably wear pantyhose when running, it is far more comfortable than having nothing between your foot and shoe.
  • A large flat surface to practise on, that does not hurt too much to fall on.
