When you get first time guests in church, first impressions matter and you will be wanting to engage their interest and enfold them into the community so that they feel ready to stay.

Step 1

Greet the guests. Ensure that there is somebody available always to be on the watch for newcomers. It should be the responsibility of this person or persons to make newcomers feel welcome, acknowledged and comfortable. Have this person answer any of their questions.

Step 2

Offer a tour of the church facilities. This will orientate the newcomers and help them feel more at ease. Restroom facilities, coathanging space and other such comfort inducing elements should be included.

Step 3

Ensure that the church is in excellent shape. The church should be well maintained and tidy both indoors and out. If you have newcomers who are comparing churches, make sure that yours comes out on top. Mow the front lawn, paint the doors, screw back in any items coming loose and keep rugs, floors and walls immaculate. Arrange Bibles and hymnbooks neatly and ensure that everything is well dusted. Keep neat notice boards. People notice these things when they are first assessing a place and it also reflects the extent of church community involvement in keeping the church in good condition.

Step 4

Provide printed materials and other relevant resources. Give the newcomers reading material about the church and its community to take away with them. This will help them to make their decision to return. It is also a very good idea to print an introductory flier for newcomers that outlines history, events, community make up etc.

Step 5

Make introductions to the pastor and other key community members. This helps to make newcomers feel important and helps them to understand that they matter to your church and that their presence is very much desired.

Step 6

Follow up. Request a contact detail (phone is best) and contact the newcomers a day after they came to church. Ask them if they would be interested in more information and inform them that the church community eagerly waits their return.

Tips

  • Provide newcomers with contact details of people in the church they can talk to if they want more information or advice.
  • Show them were the restrooms are located.

Warnings

  • Don't leave newcomers alone. It is very important that somebody remains with them and helps them or reassures them as needed. Do not be overly solicitous but do be engaged.
